Covid-19 Restrictions Were Lifted in Time for Early Sakura Blossoms

INTERNATIONAL: Japan lifted its Covid-19 restrictions just in time for thousands of Japanese to gather in central Tokyo Monday, 28 March, to enjoy the view of cherry blossoms or what is locally known as Sakura.

The flowers reached full bloom in Tokyo on Sunday 27 March, four days earlier than expected, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

People were seen strolling down the street, taking pictures, or rowing on boats. They enjoyed the view, the weather, and the lifted restrictions.

69-year-old, Akemi Shimizu, said that her heart hurts when she watches the news of Ukraine war. So this year, she feels that being able to see cherry blossoms is a blessing. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, and also the war in Ukraine, she feels grateful to be able to enjoy a life in peace like this.

Usually, people come to the parks to sit under the cherry trees for picnics, singing, and drinking. However, due to the pandemic, the government has asked people to refrain from eating and drinking outdoors to prevent spreading the disease.
